Gold purity is one of the most important - and most misunderstood - factors in jewellery buying. The karat number (KT) tells you the proportion of pure gold in the alloy, and it directly affects the piece's colour, durability, and value. Here is what you need to know.
Understanding Karats
Pure gold is 24 karats. This means 24KT gold is 99.9% pure gold with virtually no other metals mixed in. Lower karat numbers indicate a higher proportion of alloy metals (typically silver, copper, or zinc) mixed with the gold.
24KT (99.9% gold) - The purest form. Rich, deep yellow colour. Very soft and malleable - ideal for jadau work where the gold needs to be pressed around stones. Not suitable for everyday wear due to its softness.
22KT (91.6% gold) - The standard for Indian heritage jewellery. Slightly harder than 24KT while retaining a warm, rich colour. The most popular choice for traditional designs.
18KT (75% gold) - Significantly harder and more durable. Slightly paler yellow. Commonly used for contemporary designs, diamond-set pieces, and jewellery intended for daily wear.
14KT (58.3% gold) - Very durable, noticeably lighter in colour. Popular in Western jewellery markets. Less common in traditional Indian designs.
Which Purity Is Right for You?
The choice depends on several factors:
For jadau and polki jewellery: 22KT or 24KT is essential. The traditional craft requires the malleability of high-purity gold to achieve the seamless stone settings that define jadau work.
For everyday wear: 18KT offers the best balance of beauty and durability. It resists scratches better and maintains its shape over time.
For investment: Higher karat gold holds its value more directly because a greater proportion of the piece is pure gold. 22KT and 24KT pieces are easier to evaluate and resell.
